Tonka Beans are indigenous to northern South America and have a controversial history. They have been banned in the United States since 1954! The beans contain around 3% coumarin, which causes liver damage if consumed in large quantities. If cautiously consumed in small quantities it is not only safe but incredibly delicious. Think of the flavours of vanilla, but with notes of cloves, cinnamon, cherry and almond. They've also been marketed as an aphrodisiac, along with other medicinal purposes.  

Best if grated on a Microplane or other grater.
