Complex and full-bodied, allspice has the peppery taste of cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. Not a blend of "all spices," as the name might suggest, but a berry of an allspice tree. Equally, suits both savoury and sweet dishes. The backbone of Jamaican cuisine used in jerk blends for meat or European pickled dishes. But also effective in sweet applications like mulling spices, or as a warm element in cakes, desserts and preserves.
Lightly crush the whole berries before toasting to release flavour oils. You can use whole, cracked berries in slow-cooked dishes. We recommend purchasing allspice whole, and grinding fresh when possible. But we also offer freshly ground allspice for your convenience.
